Why won't YouTube videos play in Google Slides (or EdPuzzle)?

Question

A YouTube video I inserted into Google Slides used to play fine (often without ads), but now Slides says the content isn't available — even though the same video plays normally if I go straight to YouTube. What's going on, and is there a workaround?

Answer

This isn't a problem with your slides or your Chromebook — it's YouTube.

Over the past year, YouTube has been closing off the ad-free ways that third-party tools used to embed its videos. That's also why EdPuzzle stopped being usable for us: it relied on the same kind of embedding. Playing a video directly on youtube.com still works because that's the full, ad-supported experience; the stripped-down embedded version many tools used is what's being blocked or limited.

This is a YouTube policy change, not something UPrep or Google Workspace controls, and any workaround is likely temporary — YouTube appears to be closing these gaps one at a time.

A couple of things worth trying if a specific video won't play:

  • Remove the video from the slide and re-insert it. This occasionally clears up the error on its own.
  • If it's a video you or a colleague uploaded, check that Allow embedding is turned on for that video in YouTube Studio.

If neither helps, the realistic options going forward are:

  • Play the video directly from youtube.com and accept that ads may run.
  • For content you have the rights to, download the video file and insert it into the slide directly, instead of linking to YouTube.

There isn't a reliable ad-free trick left for embedding YouTube in Slides or similar tools. If this is a recurring need for your class, reach out to Academic Technology — we can help think through licensed, ad-free video options.
