Notifications
"Why is Schoology emailing my student so much?" and "why isn't it notifying them at all?" are two of the most common Schoology questions faculty and families ask. Most of the answer comes down to two mechanics:
What Triggers an Overdue Notification
An assignment past its due date with no submission and no score generates an Overdue notification.
What Clears One
A submission, a manually entered grade, an Excused or Missing exception, the course being archived, or Enable Submission being turned off for that assignment. See Gradebook Exceptions (Flags) for what each exception does.
Why the Submissions Toggle Matters Most
If you leave Submissions on for an assignment you don't actually want submitted electronically, Schoology treats it as missing the moment the due date passes — even if you collected it in person. This is the single most common cause of false "missing work" alerts, and it trains students to ignore the notification entirely, accurate or not. See Assignments and Materials for how to turn it off.
Student and Family Notification Settings
Students and families can adjust how often (and whether) they're notified in their own Schoology account settings. See Schoology for Students and Schoology Overview for Families.
